The case I was planning on using was a Rosewell -> https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?d=rosewell+rack+mount

However- I cancelled building a newer, lower-power NAS. The reasons- Ryzen cannot easily support my needs. Since Ryzen processors only have around 20 PCIe lanes available- it wouldn’t be suitable as a replacement.

I would ideally need.. a minimum of-

SAS/SATA HBA – 8 Lanes
10/40G NIC – 8 Lanes
NVMe – 16 lanes worth

Notice- I am already nearly double the available lanes. While there are multiplexor’s for NVMe, I was not willing to sacrifice performance.

As well, I am not willing to sacrifice having 10/40G networking either, as the bandwidth comes in quite handy.

With the R720XD, I have no such limitations. EACH xeon processor has 40 PCIe lanes. So- running multiple NVMes, Both 10 and 40G NICs, GPUs, etc- is not an issue at all.

Lastly- after doing a cost analysis- I don’t think it would be worth doing as the bulk majority of my power usage, is just HDDs spinning.

Have you found a “decent, rack-mountable case” for your truenas upgrade? I am planning a build for one using a Ryzen so I can have ECC at a reasonable price.

In reply to Toan. My consumption is mostly because I use 128 for the drives power level, which keeps all 14 drives aways spinning. Overall, is usually idles around 190w

I have a R720XD with 6 12tb drive and 3 800GB SSD and 2 250 GB SSD

I have a NVIDIA p2000 and an intel dual 10gb spf+ nic. I’m removed all to 64gb of ram and I’m running one E5-2330Lv2. I idle at about 120watts and about 140-150 while Plex is running several streams. I’m on TrueNas Scale

The ironic part, is that I am in the process of moving most of my servers to a k8s cluster composed of SFF and MFF optiplex 7040s, all of which costed under 100$ each!

The r720xd still has its place, aa shoving 100T of storage into a bunch of SFF cases doesn’t generally work out very well.

But, as of this moment, the big server I have is basically only being used for bulk storage and Backups.

All of the small services are hosted on SFFs.

Replaced it because the CPU wasn’t beefy enough. Ironic, lol

Which- part are you stuck on?

For the part of installing fully kiosk- scroll up and read over it again.

There is the app, which gets installed on the Tablet. From home assistant, there is an integration which will connect to it. To note- the integration is now built into home assistant and no longer requires HACs.

Hello… I have questions about this. When you say install things like Full Kiosk Browser where am I installing it? Am I on Home Assistant on the tablet or should I be signed in to a browser directly on the Home Assistant server? All this confuses me because I’m a total newbie with HA. It’s unclear to me where I need to be or if it even matters at all. Thanks in advance!
